The Yogi Tree

You know the yoga craze is well and truly upon us when you find a place with such an obvious reference to the ancient Indian art of physical wellbeing. No prizes for guessing that The Yogi Tree promotes healthy, organic food nor for the fact that the cafÈ has an attached boutique selling yoga wear and accessories.

Set in a quiet corner of the Gardens, The Yogi Tree is inviting and comfortable. It’s spacious, with large windows letting in lots of natural light, making it ideal for a lazy brunch. You wouldn’t feel out of place sipping a hot cup of coffee here while reading the morning paper.

The menu is fairly extensive, with dishes from all over the world, listed alongside little snippets explaining the various nutrition benefits of their ingredients. Not unexpectedly, there’s a good selection of herbal tonics and fresh juices. The Bittersweet (RM12), a blend of bittergourd, apple, cucumber and celery, was a refreshing start. Besides being good for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure levels, it had just the right amount of sharpness to awaken the senses.

From their large selection of salads and other small bites, we chose the broccoli, spinach and pine nut quiche (RM12). The filling was tasty, full of greens, balanced with the cream and cheese. However, the pastry was thick and dry.

The Yogi Tree excelled with their main dishes. The cheeseburger’s (RM26) char-grilled beef patty was juicy and luscious. Crushed potatoes drizzled with olive oil, as a side dish, was an unexpected surprise. The burger bun was a little dry though. Perhaps pastries and bread are not their strong point.

Their lighter version of pasta carbonara (RM19) was probably the best of what we had. The fresh tagliatelle tossed in a delicious cream-less sauce came with plenty of mushrooms and bacon bits. The ayam percik nasi ulam (RM20) also showed The Yogi Tree had a decent mastery of local flavours. The rice was fragrant, the chicken moist and the bean sprouts that came with the ulam were fresh and crunchy.

For dessert, the white chocolate crËme brulee (RM12) could have had smoother custard, but the subtle taste of white chocolate and crispy caramel was delightful. The espresso (RM7) it came with was strong and aromatic, rounding off the meal nicely. All in all, The Yogi Tree makes a good place for a casual lunch or a break from shopping.
