The next time you’ve got time to kill before or after an event at Central Market Annexe, you can head on down to Oh Malaya Cafe. Oh Malaya, or OM as they call themselves, takes over the spot where Bau-Bau Cafe and Liquid used to be, occupying a pretty large space. Aesthetically a cross between Chawan and Delicious, OM marries a contemporary look with a love for old school paraphernalia, harking back to the days when Malaysia was Malaya.
Vintage advertisements adorn the walls and there’s a dedicated cabinet storing old soda bottles, cups, trays and more. Look underneath the glass bar top (a pretty sizable island, we might add) and you’ll find a collection of old cigarette packs, all individually wrapped in their own protective plastic covers. If for nothing else, it’ll make an ice-breaker when you find yourself seated next to a stranger.
At OM, happy hours are from 3pm until closing time at 10pm. In between these hours, a jug of Carlsberg will set you back only RM35. But besides beer, you can choose from OM’s list of cocktails and wines too. House wines by glass, for example, fall in the price range of RM16 to RM18, which makes OM quite affordable. The food menu is a good variety with lighter meals like sandwiches, pastas and for some reason, quite a fair amount of different omelettes—mushroom, turkey ham, cheese and Spanish. Heavier mains include items like grilled fresh salmon (a pricier dish at RM27), sizzling steaks, and “Malaya Delights” like kampung fried rice and Hainanese fried mee. Those who intend to come specifically for their happy hours, check their “Drinker’s Delights” menu which features all things greasy and perfect with alcohol like fried chicken wings and calamari rings.
